Permission Forms

Tournament Travel Release:

I, the undersigned, give my student permission to attend those Debate and/or Forensics tournaments for which my student signs up during the 2009/2010 school year.  It is my understanding that by signing this form, my permission is extended to all those tournaments that my student attends. It is also my understanding that this single form releases my student for debate and/or forensics travel, and that there will be no subsequent forms prior to each tournament that require my signature. My student and I agree to communicate information regarding each individual tournament as provided by the “Tournament Information Form” that Ms. Hobbs will hand out prior to the particular tournament. My student and I share the responsibility of communicating departure times, hotel information (if applicable), and arrival times. If I do not wish for my student to attend a particular tournament for which he/she has signed up, I will contact Ms. Hobbs at least THREE days prior to that tournament. If there is an emergency, I will let her know asap. Finally, I have read and discussed with my student the appropriate course syllabus and the “TEAM Rules”. I am aware of the behavior that is expected of my student while at tournaments, the consequences of not attending the required number of tournaments, and the regulations regarding cancellation from a tournament.

Tournament Travel Agreement:

I, the undersigned, agree to adhere to the “TEAM Rules” while attending Debate and/or Forensics tournaments. I understand the behavior that is expected of me, and intend to represent my school with dignity, honor, and pride. I have also read the appropriate syllabus and understand the consequences of not attending the required number of tournaments as well as the regulations regarding tournament cancellation. Finally, I will show the “Tournament Information Form” to my parent(s) and/or guardian(s) prior to each tournament. I understand that it is my responsibility to make my parents/guardians aware of the tournaments for which I have signed up well in advance, and to share information such as departure times, hotel information (if applicable), and arrival times. The communication between my parents/guardians and myself is essential to avoiding misunderstandings and conflict of activities.

DEBATE & FORENSICS TRAVEL RULES

Following these rules is a necessity for team travel. Students who do not follow team rules or guidelines may be asked to complete alternate assignments in place of tournament attendance for the good of the team.

  1. No alcohol, tobacco products, or other illegal drugs are permitted on trips. Violations will result in a discipline notice and suspension of traveling privileges.  Additional punishment in accordance with school rules will also apply.

  2. On overnight trips, curfew is 11:00 pm. Lights out at 11:30 pm. Students should be in their own rooms at curfew, not someone else’s. Violations of curfew result in the suspension of traveling privileges, additional suitable punishment as deemed necessary, and a message home (KSHSAA).  Overnight trips are also a reward, that means you have to earn the right to travel.  This right can also be lost if overall behavior is not as it should be.

  3. Students should not exercise public displays of affection in rounds, during travel, or at tournaments. Violations may result in detention time and/or suspension from traveling.

  4. While at tournaments, students will always be in a location where the sponsor expects them to be or where they have told the sponsor they will be. Violations may result in detention time and/or suspension from traveling.

  5. Inappropriate language or conversations on trips is not allowed. This includes abusive remarks to other squad members or to other teams. Bus behavior must be exemplary. Excessive violations will result in detention time and a discipline notice.

  6. Students should work together as a team.  Students who are found to work against the interests of the team in the coaches' opinion will be suspended from travel.  Examples of working against the interests of the team could include, but is not limited to:  taking actions that harm an individual's advancement at a given tournament, taking actions that can hurt the reputation of the team, and taking actions that can hurt the standing of the team.

  7. Sponsors should be treated with the respect.  Students are to listen to them and follow their requests.  Violations may result in detention time and/or suspension from traveling.

  8. Students should dress appropriately for tournaments. For females, appropriate dress would include dress pants, suits, and dresses. Guys need to wear a nice tie. No flip flops, or tennis shoes. Clothes that are considered inappropriate for school wear would be inappropriate for tournament competition. If you have a question about what is appropriate, ask before the tournament.

  9. Students must cancel or withdraw from a tournament at least 3 days prior to the tournament.  Failure to cancel in the specified time will result in zero points for that tournament.  Students will be required to pay the entry fees for their missed attendance. Students are allowed to choose which tournaments they would like to attend.  It is their responsibility to make sure that their choices do not conflict with other activities.

  10. Students should behave appropriately during assemblies. Applaud respectfully for recipients and pay quiet attention to the proceedings.  Do not make inappropriate remarks towards other students, coaches, or judges.

  11. Students who wish to travel to overnight tournaments should be prepared to fundraise or provide the necessary funds for travel.  Students qualifying for Nationals may be required to provide for a part or all of the traveling expenses.

  12. All rules established in the school handbook and Coaches’ handbook will be enforced.

IF A STUDENT BREAKS ANY OF THESE RULES WHILE AT A TOURNAMENT, THE SPONSOR MAY CONTACT THE STUDENT'S PARENT OR GUARDIAN AND HAVE THE STUDENT REMOVED FROM THE TOURNAMENT.  THE STUDENT WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE TOURNAMENT IF THIS OCCURS.
