You will be required to participate in two taped selection interviews.  In one interview you will be the interviewee and, in the other interview, you will be the interviewer.  These interviews should last 15-18 minutes each.

As the interviewee, you will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Search for a job description for a position similar to the one you would like to apply for after graduating from high school.   This could include an internship or you could do an application for a scholarship that requires some type of interview process.  You will need to give an official copy of this description to your interviewer so than an appropriate interview can be planned.  This description should also be turned in.
  2. Prepare a letter of application and resume for the job in the above description.  You will need to give a copy of this letter to the interviewer as well.  The letter must be error free and an accurate representation of your current status.  You should also include an up-to-date resume (check at BCCC for directions, they are also online).
  3. Conduct yourself appropriately in the selection interview.  This includes, but is not limited to being approprately dressed for the situation.

As the interviewer, you will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Plan a selection interview based upon the job description you are given.  This includes the development of an interview schedule using the format presented in class.
  2. Manage the interview as planned.  Your interview should contain an appropriate opening and closing.  Probing should be used effectively.  Appropriate dress is required.  It is your primary responsibility to make sure the interview lasts the required time.
  3. Interpret the interview.  Explain in 2-3 typed pages your evaluation of the interviewee during the interview.  Demonstrate that you have thought through your decision.  Explain both strengths and weaknesses of the interviewee and whether or not you would recommend him or her for the position.   Be tough and make sure that the candidate is qualified for the position.  Justify your decision.

You are responsible for finding your own partner for this exercise.  Choose carefully.  You and your partner will be responsible for taping the assignment outside of class.  Make sure you choose someone that you can coordinate times with.

As the interviewee you will need to turn in to me a copy of the job description (10), a resume (15), an application letter (15), and a copy of the interview for evaluation (on cd or VHS tape) (30).  As the interviewer, you will need to turn in a copy of your interview schedule (20), a tape of the interview for evaluation (it may be the same tape), (20), and an evaluation of the interviewee (30).

These point totals represent the total points that each section will be evaluated for.  They are not automatic points.

Make these interviews as close to a real selection interview as possible.  The harder you work at the project, the more rewarding you should find this assignment to be.

You will have automatic points deducted for not making time (less than 15 minutes).
