DESCRIPTION: The informative speech is a 5-7 minute presentation in which you will share information about a topic of your choice. The information should be presented in an unbiased fashion with the intent only to create or increase the level of awareness or knowledge that the audience has about the topic. The topic should be one that lends itself to the use of sensory aids. You should know about and be interested in the topic. The speech should be understandable, relevant, and interesting to your audience.
 
OBJECTIVES:
  • TO SHARPEN RESEARCH SKILLS AND PUT THESE TO USE IN DEVELOPING AN ORIGINAL OUTLINE AND SPEECH
  • TO PRACTICE AND IMPROVE YOUR DELIVERY SKILLS
  • TO ENCOURAGE THE EFFECTIVE USE OF PowerPoint SENSORY AIDS TO ENHANCE YOUR PRESENTATION
  • TO ORGANIZE INFORMATION IN A WRITTEN OUTLINE FORM WHICH THE AUDIENCE CAN UNDERSTAND
  • TO SHARE INFORMATION IN ORDER TO IMPART KNOWLEDGE TO THE AUDIENCE ABOUT A TOPIC OF YOUR CHOICE
  • TO DECREASE APPREHENSION WHILE SPEAKING
 
CONTENTYour coverage of the topic should be in-depth. Present concrete rather than abstract ideas. Feel compelled to cite six   (FIVE) outside researched sources to back up your ideas. These sources should be cited orally within the speech. Four of these sources must come from Butler online resources. One of these sources must be an interview. Instructions will follow after discussing interviewing in class. There should be at least 6  (FIVE) oral citations.. 
 
 
REQUIREMENTS:
1)      Turn in a typed outline of your speech which includes the following:
a)      Complete sentences
b)      Underlined transitions
c)       An introduction and conclusion written in paragraph form
d)      Identified parts within your introduction
e)      A bibliography with at least six (FIVE) researched sources. Identify the 4 BCC library database sources and tell where you found them.
2)      Your speech should be 5-7 minutes long. For every minute over or under this limit you will be penalized 5 points.
3)      PowerPoint Sensory aids are required. Follow the guidelines that have been presented in class for sensory aid presentations with speeches.
4)      Use a keyword outline or less during the speech   Your outline should have 150 words or less, violation will result in a letter grade deduction.(I will count symbols and numbers as words).
5)      Do not use the podium.
6)  Turn in a record of your interview (name, qualifications, date, time, location, questions, contact information).  
 
GRADING: This assignment is worth 145 points. They will be divided accordingly: 25 points for proper outline, 10 points for organization as presented within the speech, 25 points for audience adaptation, 30 points for delivery, 30 points for research and credibility and 25 points for your use of PowerPoint as a sensory aid. 
 
Butler County Requirements:
  An informative presentation using PowerPoint or multi-media per the text
(1.) Uses technology in the visual presentation
(2.) Cites at least four out of 6 sources from the BCC Library databases with 1 of those 6 sources being an interview; and cites a minimum of 6 in-speech citations with those 6 sources.
(3.) At least five-7 minutes in length
(4.) Uses delivery and wording skills
(5.) Scored on all of the assessment criteria outlined by the department.
(6.) Research skills including interviews
(7.) A formal outline
(8.) Notes may consist of the outline with sources and citations; the text of the outline must not exceed 1/3 of the spoken presentation.
