DESCRIPTION: Your assignment is to present a 6-8 minute persuasive speech designed to get the audience to change their beliefs, values, or attitudes towards something. It may motivate the audience to act. The choice of topic should be of interest to the speaker and be a topic that the speaker supports. The topic should also be controversial.
 
OBJECTIVES:
  • TO SHARPEN RESEARCH SKILLS AND PUT THESE TO USE IN DEVELOPING AN ORIGINAL OUTLINE AND SPEECH
  • TO PRACTICE AND IMPROVE YOUR DELIVERY SKILLS
  • TO ENCOURAGE THE EFFECTIVE USE OF SENSORY AIDS TO ENHANCE YOUR PRESENTATION
  • TO ORGANIZE INFORMATION IN A WRITTEN OUTLINE FORM WHICH THE AUDIENCE CAN UNDERSTAND
  • TO SHARE INFORMATION IN ORDER TO GAIN THE ADHERENCE OF THE AUDIENCE TOWARDS A TOIC OF YOUR CHOICE
  • TO DECREASE APPREHENSION WHILE SPEAKING
  • TO APPLY CONSCIOUSLY THE THEORIES OF PERSUASION TO A PUBLIC SPEAKING SITUATION
  • TO LEARN HOW TO GATHER INFORMATION FROM A SURVEY AND USE IT IN DESIGNING YOUR MESSAGE
  • TO LEARN HOW TO USE MONROE’S MOTIVATED SEQUENCE
  • TO PRACTICE INTERVIEWING SKILLS
 
CONTENT:  Your coverage of the topic should be in-depth. Present concrete rather than abstract ideas. Feel compelled to cite SIX outside researched sources to back up your ideas. These sources should be cited orally within the speech. Four of these sources must come from Butler online resources.  
 
AUDIENCE ANALYSIS: In order to gauge the audience’s stance towards your speech you will be required to turn in a survey to be handed out to your classmates. This survey should be designed to help you in assessing the audience’s persuadability on the topic.
 
REQUIREMENTS:
1)Turn in a typed outline of your speech which includes the following:
a)Complete sentences
b)Underlined transitions
c)An introduction and conclusion written in paragraph form
d)Identified parts within your introduction
e)A bibliography with at least six researched sources.  Identify the 4 BCC sources and indicate where you found them.
f)Identify the parts of Monroe’s Motivated Sequence.
2)Your speech should be 6-8 minutes long. For every minute over or under this limit you will be penalized 5 points.
3)Sensory aids are required. Follow the guidelines that have been presented in class.  If you use PowerPoint, make sure that it is installed on the teacher's desktop by 8 a.m. the morning of the speech.
4)Use a keyword outline or less during the speech on notecards - I will deduct points if you are reading too much.
5)  Do not use the podium.
6)  After surveying the audience, complete a persuasive scale for your audience.  Use this information for your speech and write a paragraph that explains how you adapted your speech based upon this information for your audience.
 
 
 
GRADING:This assignment is worth 185 points. They will be divided accordingly: 20 points for proper outline, & 15 points for  AA survey & evaluation,  50 points for following Monroe’s Motivated Sequence, 10 points for sensory aids, 25 points for delivery, 35 points for evidence, 30 points other. (Organization is measured throughout the Monroe’s motivated sequence portion, as is audience adaptation).
 
 
BCCC’s requirements:
 
A persuasive or motivational presentation using Monroe’s Motivational Sequence
(1.) Cites a minimum of 5 out of 6 sources from the BCC library databases with 1 of those 6 sources being an interview; and cites a minimum of 6 in-speech citations from those 6 sources.
(2.) At least 6-8 minutes in length
(3.) Research skills including interviews
(4.) A formal outline
(5.) Visual aids and PowerPoint is at the choice of the speaker and the instructor
(6.) Notes may consist of the outline with sources and citations; the text of the outline must not exceed 1/3 of the spoken presentation.
(7.) Critical thinking, reasoning, ethics, and emotional appeals are used in this presentation.
(8.) Demonstrate the use of ethos, pathos, and logos.
(9.) This assignment is a major summative assessment task and should employ all skills learned throughout the semester.
